BBB Recognizes National Small Business Week

May 20-26 is National Small Business Week and a time to celebrate the growing business demographic in our country. Entrepreneurs and small business owners are the backbone of the U.S. economy: 60 to 80 percent of the new jobs in the country are created by the approximately 27.2 million small businesses in the U.S. It is estimated that over half of Americans either own or work for a small business. In honor of National Small Business Week, Better Business Bureau is encouraging small business owners to take advantage of the many resources for small businesses from the BBB and from the Federal Trade Commission:

Presidents Message:
Opportunists Knock

A mild winter and an early and unseasonably warm spring means that Door to Door Sales could be at an all time high this season. With warm weather here the Better Business Bureau would like to give you a heads up when it comes to potential door-to-door scams that are making their way back into the area.

Scam Alert:
Phishing Persists

No this is not a broken record BUT it is certainly beginning to sound like one! It had been a while since we'd had any new attacks and just when we were beginning to think that we were in the clear the phishing scam strikes again and is back with a vengeance. So, after a pretty quiet month the BBB, has renewed it's efforts investigating and working with our partners in security and law enforcement, in an effort to again shut down the troublemakers. The BBB is working diligently, both proactively and reactively to address the problem.

A Special Tip From the BBB:
National Moving Month

May is National Moving Month. The busy months for buying, selling and moving are upon us and the BBB has some tips for making things go more smoothly. In 2011, nationally, the BBB received more than l.3 million moving related inquiries and more than 9,000 complaints against movers.
