Scam Alert: Cedar Rapids Area Targeted

We've heard it for years: scammers like to use both Midwestern addresses and target Midwesterners because they are kind and trusting. The most recent problem cropped up in Cedar Rapids and after receiving numerous phone calls from residents in Cedar Rapids and other parts of Eastern Iowa, the Better Business Bureau issued an area wide warning to businesses and consumers of a scam being perpetuated by mail. Recipients of a postcard claiming they won $100 to stores such as Walmart, Target, or various gas stations were advised that they should be aware that this is a scam. The postcard instructs the "lucky winners" to call a phone number and claim their prize. Once an unsuspecting consumer would call the number, they were asked for credit card information to pay for shipping and handling charges. The BBB issued a media alert and was able to get the message out across the area that consumers should be aware that they did not win anything and this is merely an attempt to gather credit card information to be used fraudulently.

A Special Tip from the BBB:
Reducing Spam

As the number of people online grows, marketers are increasingly using e-mail messages to pitch their products and services. These unsolicited e-mail messages are referred to as "spam." Usually e-mail marketers purchase a list of e-mail addresses from a list broker, who compiles it by gathering addresses from the Internet.
