Back to Basics: What Is The BBB? As
we embark upon a very exciting time of change and rejuvenation of our
image it is important to know where we have been in order to fully
appreciate where we are going! The Better Business Bureau enjoys a 98%
favorable name recognition rating as reported by the Gallup
Organization. The BBB name is synonymous with trust and members must
meet and maintain the BBB's Standards of Membership. With our high
level of public awareness it is obvious that membership in the BBB lets
your customers and consumers at large know that a business is worthy of
their trust. Highlighted below is important background information
concerning our history, structure and services.

Employment Scams Abound
Scammers have graduated from the mundane offers for "envelope stuffing"
and "home mailer" schemes to sophisticated and realistic appearing
advertisements for movie extras and flight attendants. The obvious
appeal of these sorts of positions coupled with the information relayed
over the phone depicting glamorous high paying jobs with a minimum of
experience make consumers jump at a chance to work in these industries.

Ad Reviews Advertising
Review promotes truth in advertising to enhance consumer confidence in
businesses that advertise. Following are cases that represent recent
advertising review matters your BBB pursued. Challenges made by the
BBB, using the BBB Code of Advertising, result from information given
by consumers, competitors and through the BBB's own monitoring efforts.
The fact that a particular business responds to a BBB challenge is a
compliment to their willingness to cooperate with the BBB's
self-regulatory process and not to be taken as an admission of
impropriety on any advertiser's part.

President's Column

Chris Coleman
President
President's Column Becomes Intern's Corner this Month
The BBB has terrific employees each of who are committed to fostering
ethics and honesty in the marketplace. It is uplifting to be a part of
such a great team.
We are fortunate to have, for the second year, a stellar intern from
Drake University, Rachel Manuel. Rachel was raised in Iowa City and is
a senior majoring in Law, Politics, and Society and Public Relations.
Rachel is a member of Alpha Phi sorority. This spring she was honored
at Drake, receiving top junior at the Leaders and Luminaries Ceremony.
The award goes to students that have made an extraordinary impact in
the Drake and Des Moines community. Rachel is very active and
instrumental in The 10,000 Hours Show, an organization focused on
engaging young people in volunteer service.
We've asked Rachel to help in projects that run the gamut, from helping
pick out new paint color for the office to rolling out the launch of
our branding update. Rachel wrote the following about her position at
the BBB.
