 Advance Notice of Funding Availability: Railroad Revolving and Grant Program

The Railroad Revolving Loan and Grant (RRLG) Program provides financial assistance to improve rail facilities that will create jobs, spur economic activity and improve the rail transportation system in Iowa. The program is funded through appropriations from the state legislature and repayments from loans for rail development projects funded in the past.

 Financial Services Firm Growing in Cedar Falls, Des Moines

A 40-year-old financial services firm is planning an expansion in Cedar Falls and Des Moines.

Jack Henry & Associates, based in Monett, Mo., acquired Cedar Falls-based Banno, formerly T8 Webware, operations here and in Des Moines in 2014. Jack Henry now plans to invest about $17 million.

 BRE Awards Program

The PDI Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Awards Program recognizes the contribution of BRE to the success of local and regional economic development initiatives.

Purpose of Award: To increase the focus on BRE in economic development organizations by identifying programs and projects that have significant impact on Iowa communities.

Eligibility: All PDI members are eligible to receive the award. Eligible programs/projects are those in which the nominated entity plays a coordinating role or in which BRE activities play an integral role in the success of an economic development strategy. The programs/projects nominated may include those serving local or regional areas. Ongoing BRE programs or projects within the last 24 months are eligible.

 HNI Receives Tax Credits for $23M Project
By Jennifer DeWitt, Quad City Times, February 23, 2016

Office furniture maker HNI Corp. has been awarded $579,523 in tax benefits from the state of Iowa to help modernize some of its Muscatine manufacturing plants.

The funding, awarded Friday by the Iowa Economic Development Authority, will assist HNI in its plans for a $23 million modernization project.

 Progress: Whitewater Plans on Course in Waterloo, Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls is finally taking the plunge toward building a whitewater course on the Cedar River. Neighboring Waterloo is also moving forward with plans for its own course.

Charles City sits upstream of both communities and set the whitewater course trend. The community opened the state's first whitewater course in 2011 and has seen success in drawing people and community members to the river.

Staffing: 11.5 FTEs—Economic development staff includes the CEO, Director of Economic Development, Workforce Programming (.5 FTE), Research (.5 FTE), and also shares Marketing, Finance, and Reception services with the other divisional operating units.
Board: There are four boards of directors for the organization representing 70 members. The economic development board includes 19 members; three-year terms; no more than two consecutive terms
Priority Areas: Business Retention and Expansion; Entrepreneurial Support; Workforce Development; Business Attraction; Industrial Park Development
Capital Campaign: Yes- 2014 - 2018. Goal: $1.75 million. Actual: $2.1 million
Metrics: Jobs Created and Retained; Private Capital Investment; Population Target; New Business Starts, Existing Business Visits (90 per year), Student Engagement
News: In 2015, ranked 17th out of 536 Micropolitans for economic development project volume by Site Selection Magazine. Local economic statistics have been phenomenal due to the construction of Iowa Fertilizer Plant just miles down the road.
