Building Enthusiasm – How to Face Difficult Times, Difficult People and Come out on Top
By Pat Merritt, CEcD, Director from Presentation by Glen Gould and Benjamin Turpin

Turpin shared the story of how he met Glen Gould while giving a speech at a Toastmaster's Club in Florida. Gould came up to him and said "So how long are you going to run from your destiny?" That was the beginning of their partnership in inspiring people to live their purpose with passion.

Gould spoke on the importance of having enthusiasm in whatever you do. Having excitement about what might happen can apply to you personally as well as the expectations of your organization and your community. What can we get excited about?

Gould also emphasized the importance of doing something different, something you wouldn't normally do when you are having a bad day. If you don't, your repetition will lead you to the failure you are expecting.

From time to time, all leaders need to be reinvigorated and recharged. Enthusiasm is a quality that builds upon itself, attracting others to you. They shared the YouTube video of the musical group the "Black Eyed Peas" shown on the Oprah Show where the enthusiasm in the crowd was started by a few professional dancers and built to include the entire audience like a virus spreading through a village. This presentation was not a technical talk, as their presentation the day before had been about the importance of social networking. This talk was a talk from the heart and one that inspired NREDA Annual Conference participants to live their purpose with enthusiasm and passion.
