HOME-GROWN E-MAIL: What you don't know can hurt you
Thumb through the marketing journals these days and you will nearly always
find a discussion about e-mail marketing. Permission-based marketing has
proven to be the most cost-effective and accountable method of direct marketing.
It provides the most effective means of calculating Return on Investment
(ROI). As a result,
many businesses are evaluating their current marketing strategies with respect
to adding an electronic direct marketing component. You can achieve this
goal in many ways. Perhaps your company is already sending regular e-mail
to your address list through your desktop program such as Outlook. If so,
congratulations on having developed a list and begun the communications process!
And yet, please be aware that what you don't know CAN hurt you. KNOW THESE TERMS:
Filter Triggers Blacklist/Whitelist B*lk Delivery Blockers Filter Triggers:
Note that this paragraph contains words with "*" replacing certain vowels.
Certain words can cause e-mail filters to define your delivery as "SP*M"
- and sp*m is one of them! Use of this word in an e-mail will initiate the
filtering process on some of the computers you target for delivery. It is
necessary to keep on top of this ever-changing list of triggers. These keyword
triggers include ad*lt(u), s*bscribe(u), fre*(e), and b*lk(u). Blacklist/Whitelist:
Your e-mail is sent from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Across
the country, servers are working together to facilitate proper e-mail communications.
Your server's behavior affects your e-mail delivery success. If you send
mail from a server that is known for sending a lot of sp*m, then you may
be sending from a server that has been blacklisted and your mail may not
go through to the next server. Look to send mail from a source that has
"White Knight Status" so that your mail is given the red carpet to your targeted
addresses. B*lk Delivery Blockers:
Large quantities of e-mail sent from one source at one single moment may
never make their destinations at all. This kind of delivery may be flagged
as sp*m because of its high quantity. Look for delivery systems that stagger
delivery and send from a variety of ISPs.

In April, dhg Productions, Inc.
delivered their inaugural edition of their new electronic newsletter "The
WOW! Factor." The dhg subscribers appeared to enjoy the newsletter, as the
Open Rate was strong and the Click-Through-Rate was fantastic!
The
staff at dhg Productions initiated the electronic newsletter as a piece of
their ongoing communications strategy. The newsletter is sent quarterly
to the company's house list, which has doubled since the concept was first
discussed! You can sign up to receive The WOW! Factor here.
